I once was a turtle, but now I’m a snake.
If you don’t believe me, ask my friend Froggy Jake.
On second thought don’t bother, for he’s long gone.
Like to think he’s trapping flies in the Great Pond beyond.
Moments ago I slowly crawled from the lake hither.
Now, sans shell, toward the tall grass I slither.
How this came to pass, I cannot possibly know,
For this abrupt change came as a shock and a blow.
Suddenly I realized upon a rock by the lake,
I once was a turtle, but now I’m a snake.
